The Sovereignty of God III

(The Technical Aspects of God’s Sovereignty)

INTRODUCTION

  1. The biblical definition of the sovereignty of God and the authority of the believer is a “breaking point” for some traditionalists in the body of Christ.
  2. The sovereign God can do anything He pleases.  God has, however, limited Himself to the parameters of His word.
    1. Psalm 138:1-2
    2. Romans 1:17
      1. God is not mysterious.  He wants His children to know Him; consequently, He reveals Himself in His word.
    3. St. Matthew 7:7-11
      1. Knowing God means having predictable results from the Word.  (verses 7-8)
      2. No good father will give his children anything negative or evil “because he can” or because he is sovereign.
      3. A good father desires for his children to have the best.
      4. The sovereignty of God means all that the Father will use or exhaust to get His good pleasure operating in the lives of His children.
    4. Romans 8:28
      1. God can use anything to promote His good will in your life.   He is not limited to natural or physical laws; nor is he limited by your enemies.
    5. Jeremiah 29:11 (KJV, AMP)
      1. The predictable outcome and expectation for the believer’s life is good.
      2. Peace is equivalent to having no lack.
  3. Understanding the sovereignty of God
    1. Sovereignty means:
      1. God can use anything and everything to work His purpose in the earth (wind, tree, sea, stars, natural laws, physical laws)
      2. Possessing supreme or ultimate power [over anything and anyone]
      3. Acting or doing independently without outside interference
    2. The believer’s life is supposed to be shielded by the favor of God.
      1. Psalm 5:12
      2. Favor – God rewriting rules and laws to benefit and bring His good pleasure to manifestation in the lives of His children.
    3. Psalm 78:40-41
      1. The children of Israel limited God by way of their thinking.  He otherwise could have done all things, anything and everything for them; just as He walled up the Red Sea, just as He caused water to flow from a rock and manna to fall from the sky.
    4. Natural means do not limit God
      1. Sarah bears a child in her old age – Genesis 18:14
      2. The Red Sea is walled up on both sides to allow the children of Israel’s safe passage – Exodus 14
      3. Lazarus is raised from the dead – St. John 11
      4. An iron axe head floats – II Kings 6

FOUNDATIONAL TEXT

  1. Ecclesiastes 8:2-4
    1. Evil is anything that disagrees or contradicts with the word of God.  (verse 3)
    2. For example, ten spies brought back an evil report in Numbers 13, but thank God for the other two.
    3. King is specific (as in the King) as well as general (for the believer).
      1. Revelation 1:6
      2. Revelation 5:10
      3. Romans 5:17 (KJV, AMP)
  2. As believers, we are to reign in this life just as God reigns in heaven.
    1. The believer’s authority is in the earth.
      1. Psalm 82
      2. Obadiah 1:21
      3. St. John 8:34-36
      4. Philippians 2:5-6
      5. St. John 10:30

  1.          I.            God’s sovereignty personified in a dry rod
    1. Numbers 17:1-8
      1. God’s sovereignty bypasses the natural order of things so that:
        1. A dry rod blossoms without roots
        2. A dry rod blossoms without roots from its original tree
        3. A dry rod blossoms out of season
        4. A dry rod produces full almonds
        5. A dry rod blossoms in only 24 hours
      2. Levi’s rod [detached from the way things are supposed to operate] blossoms and yields almond.
        1. In the Bible, almonds are a sign of life, the system of life for the believer.
      3. St. John 15:1
        1. The word of God is our root system; the source of the supernatural; the source of miracles for the believer.
